Labnetwest Meeting Brings Science Technicians to MCCPosted in College Community on Friday, 5 July, 2019
On Wednesday, 3 July Mandurah Catholic College hosted the Term Two Meeting of Labnetwest Inc. Labnetwest is the Association of Science Technicians in Independent Schools in WA. The group’s purpose is to provide a platform to promote ideas, solve problems, facilitate professional development and networking opportunities for its members.
46 Lab Technicians attended the meeting, held in the Lecture Theatre which began with a welcome and introduction to our College from Principal Mr Chris Wallace.
The first speaker for the day was Dr Steve Fisher, representing the Peel Harvey Catchment Council and Peel Bright Minds. Steve was the 2018 winner of the Esteam Awards Communicator of the Year in the Peel Region. Steve spoke about local projects, that as volunteers we could get involved with, including Dolphin Watch which helps to maintain records on the health and populations of the Peel Harvey Estuary dolphins, and how you can download the Fin Guide and identify dolphins, report where and when you sighted them and their condition.
He also spoke about the Serpentine River Health Assessment which aims to monitor the water quality of the river system. Also a variety of issues affecting the fish populations in our waterways. Steve also introduced us to the Group Peel Bright Minds and their aim to engage young and old in science in the region through workshops, presentations and volunteer schemes.
Our Labnetwest patron Lyn Beazley, a neuroscientist and previous Chief Scientist of WA, West Australian of the Year 2015 and recent fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, spoke on the valuable work lab technicians do to provide a quality service to our schools and colleges.
After lunch we were lucky enough to have Peter Van der Wedden from Precision Balances give a talk on his products, calibration techniques and a trouble shooting Q&A which was extremely helpful and enlightening.
Overall a great day!
