St Bernadette’s House Mission – Brightwater the CovePosted in Houses on Wednesday, 21 August, 2019
For well over a decade, members of St Bernadette’s House, have been heading down to Brightwater Aged Care Home after school to visit and interact with the residents. From the end of Term 2 until the midpoint of Term 4, we will spend time with the residents once a week, taking them for a walk in their wheelchairs, or playing board games and sharing conversations.
It is our way of giving back to the community, acknowledging the dignity of each person and spending time with those who are frequently lonely. It is a wonderful House Mission that concentrates on helping the infirm as St Bernadette, our Patron Saint, did long ago.
It has been wonderful so far this year to watch the students spending time with the residents, engaging them in conversation or, where conversation is difficult, simply being with the residents and talking about themselves. We participated in the residents Christmas in July, by sending down Christmas cards. Resident Sylvia spent 10 minutes telling me how much she enjoyed receiving the Christmas cards from our students and how they helped make the event really special.
Hopefully this wonderful partnership with Brightwater the Cove can continue for many more years.

From the Students
“I started going to Brightwater in Year 7 and I have loved going ever since. It is such a great experience, getting to know the people, hearing their life stories and just giving back to our community. I have had so much fun taking to them walking, playing board games and even just being present for people. I recently went during the second week of Term 3 and just to see the smiles on their faces when we walked in cheered me up immediately. We played board games and learnt some pretty cool stories about some of the residents. I will definitely miss going next year and hope that the students of Saint Bernadette’s love it as much as I did.” Ebony Shalders – St Bernadette’s Cultural Captain
“I have been completing my St Bernadette Brightwater House Mission since Year 7. My experience of Brightwater has always been enjoyable. It has been a great joy talking to all of the residents and learning about their different life journeys. From going on walks to the ponds, feeding ducks and playing board games, it is always a fun afternoon. I am looking forward to visiting all of the residents next week.” Bronte Holmes
