St Mary’s Feast DayPosted in Houses on Monday, 16 September, 2019

Mandurah Catholic College is celebrated St Mary’s Feast Day last week.

The day commenced with liturgies in both Primary and Secondary schools. Staff shared a morning tea prepared by the St Mary’s staff and, later, all St Mary’s students and staff shared a sausage sizzle lunch cooked by the Year 12 St Mary’s Leadership team and Head of House, Miss Charlie Fourie.

St Mary is one of six saints who are honoured in the College’s House system.  Each House is named after a particular saint and that saint’s attributes and values are embraced by the House and embodied in its House Mission

St Mary’s Mission is the Cancer Council, in particular the Relay for Life and assisting the rehabilitation of breast cancer patients. Students from Years 1 to Year 12 spent the afternoon participating in a walkathon to raise funds for the Relay for Life. Sewing workshops are also held throughout the year to produce specially designed cushions and carry bags (for IV drains and other medical items) for breast cancer patients undergoing operations and treatments at Fiona Stanley Hospital. The House raise $1010 during the walkathon for Relay for Life! Miss Fourie said, “Thank you to everyone who was involved! One family raised $160. This was a great effort!”

The St Mary’s House motto is “Goodness is its own reward” (Latin: Palma Virtuti) and its crest incorporates the fleur de lis (flower of the lily), which symbolises virginity and purity.

St Joseph’s, St Monica’s, St Patrick’s, St Bernadette’s and St Peter’s are the five other Houses at Mandurah Catholic College.
